Piers Anthony Xanth Reading Order: Where to Start with 47 Books
The Xanth series by Piers Anthony is one of the longest-running fantasy series in existence — 47 novels and counting, with the first published in 1977. Set in a magical land shaped like Florida where every human has a unique magical talent, it is endlessly inventive, relentlessly punny, and written entirely in publication order. You do not need to read all 47. Here is how to approach it.

Where to Start: The Original Trilogy
- The first three books form a loose trilogy and are the natural starting point:
- A Spell for Chameleon (1977)
- The Source of Magic (1979)
- Castle Roogna (1979) A Spell for Chameleon introduces Bink, the hero of the early books, and establishes the rules of Xanth. Most fans consider the original trilogy the strongest books in the series and a satisfying complete experience in themselves.
How Many Should You Read?
The honest answer is: as many as you enjoy. The series does not have an overarching plot that demands completion. Each novel is largely self-contained with a new protagonist, though recurring characters and locations tie them together. The first three to six books represent Anthony at his most focused. By book ten or so, the series has evolved into a looser format where reader-submitted characters and puns become a larger part of the fabric. Many fans enjoy the first dozen and stop there; others read all 47.
The Puns: Love Them or Leave Them
Xanth is famous — or notorious, depending on your perspective — for its relentless wordplay. Every other paragraph contains a pun, a play on words, or a groan-worthy joke. Anthony includes reader-submitted puns in later books, which some readers love as a community element and others find exhausting. If you hate puns, this is not your series. If you enjoy them, Xanth is one of the most purely fun experiences in fantasy.

Each New Book Has a New Entry Point
One of Xanth's unusual qualities is that later books often introduce a new protagonist and can be picked up without having read earlier books in the series. If you want to sample the series from a later entry point — say because you were given a specific book — you can do so without being completely lost. However, the world-building in the early books is richer and the characters more carefully developed, so the original trilogy remains the best introduction.
