Vince Flynn & Mitch Rapp Reading Order: The Complete Guide

Mitch Rapp is one of the most popular characters in American thriller fiction — a CIA counterterrorism operative who operates outside the rules to protect the United States. Vince Flynn created the series and wrote 15 novels before his death in 2013. Kyle Mills has continued the series with 9 more books. Here is exactly how to read them.

The Complication: Publication vs. Chronological Order

This is the most common source of confusion for new Rapp readers. Flynn did not write the books in chronological order. American Assassin, which is Rapp's origin story, was published 13th — not first. Two options exist: Publication order: Start with Transfer of Power (1999) and read forward. You meet Rapp already formed as an operative, which is how most fans experienced the series. Chronological order: Start with American Assassin (2010) for Rapp's origin, then Kill Shot, then Transfer of Power. This is the logical story order but was not the author's intended reading experience. Most fans recommend publication order. The origin novels work better as backstory once you know and love the character.

Is Kyle Mills a Good Continuation?

Mills was personally chosen by Flynn's family to continue the series, and the transition is smoother than most author-continuation situations. He maintains the pace and the political edge. Most readers who love the Flynn novels find the Mills books a satisfying continuation. The tone is slightly different — Mills is a leaner writer — but Rapp himself is faithfully rendered.

The Film Adaptation

The 2017 film American Assassin, starring Dylan O'Brien as Rapp and Michael Keaton as Stan Hurley, adapts the origin novel. It is a competent action thriller but considerably lighter than the books. The film was commercially successful but a sequel was not produced. If the film brought you here, start with Transfer of Power rather than the origin story — Rapp works better when encountered already dangerous.
